ICES Recognitiion Programme/ICES Awards

The ICES Recognition Programme honours individuals whose contributions have improved ICES and the community of scientists associated with it, advance marine science, and/or exemplify the objective application of ICES scientific information to societal decisions concerning the sustainable use of marine ecosystems.

The ICES Recognition Programme consists of four awards: the Outstanding Achievement Award;the Excellence Award; the Merit Awards; and the service Awards

The Outstanding Achievement Award

The outstanding achievement award represents the highest expression of recognition and appreciation for contributions to ICES and/or advancing ICES science. Collectively, the individual's contributions will have broadly touched, and enriched the ICES community and ICES programmes, over a sustained period, generally at least 15 years. Leadership will have been demonstrated by the way in which the individual has achieved a sustained commitment to building ICES as a vibrant international institution adapted to future needs or enhancing the interests of ICES to its clients. Innovation will have been through achievements in science and research and its application to policy, and/or management of ICES as an institution. This award also recognizes efforts to be supportive of colleagues and mentoring of young scientists.

No more than one Outstanding Achievement Award may be presented per year. Travel expenses to the ASC to receive the award will be paid from revenue from the ASC registration fee, and the recipient s registration fee will be waived in the future.

Excellence Award

The Excellence Award recognizes the highest level of contribution to the ICES vision of an international scientific community that is relevant, responsive, sound, and credible, concerning marine ecosystems and their relation to humanity. Like the community ICES envisions, the Award is broader than ICES. Contributions within ICES and throughout the world are eligible. Candidates for the award need not be associated with ICES, although their work will be relevant. They will have contributed through their research, scientific leadership, and/or leadership in the objective application of science to policy for sustained use and conservation of marine ecosystems. Innovation, teamwork, mentoring, and objective communication with the public exemplify the career of the recipient of this award.

The ICES Excellence Award generally will be made every third year. However, it will be awarded only if there is a candidate who fulfils the high standard intended for the Award. Under exceptional circumstances this award may be made more often with approval of the Council. Travel expenses to the ASC to receive the award will be paid from revenue from the ASC registration fee, and the recipient s registration fee will be waived in the future.

Merit Awards

The Merit Award gives formal recognition to the best research paper and poster given at the Annual Science Conference, and to the best up-and-coming new scientist making a presentation at the Annual Science Conference.

Service Awards

The Service Award recognises the achievements and contributions of outgoing chairs of expert groups, science and advisory groups, and conveners of Annual Science Conference theme sessions and ICES symposia which further the objectives of ICES. Recipients are all outgoing chairs of various Planning Groups, Study Groups, Steering Groups, Working Groups and Science, Publication, Consultative and Advisory Committees, and all outgoing conveners of Annual Science Conference theme sessions and ICES symposia.
