New SmartBuoy deployed in Celtic Deep

The SmartBuoy programme has recently been extended with Defra funding to incorporate a new site in the Celtic Seas to monitor ecosystem health as part of the Western Shelf Observatory. The work is carried out as part of a collaborative exercise between AFBI and Cefas in the context of the WSO.
The buoy is deployed in the Celtic Deep region of the Celtic Sea in 80 m of water making measurements of physical, chemical and biological variables. Data is returned in real-time via satellite telemetry and is available together with archived observations on the Cefas SmartBuoy web pages. Together with a SmartBuoy in Liverpool Bay deployed jointly with NOC it brings the total number of buoys in the WSO domain to two with 6 SmartBuoy deployed in total around the UK. Further work is in hand with Defra funding to add sub-surface environmental sensors to a Marine Institute met buoy in Irish coastal waters.
The SmartBuoy is operated by Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquacultural Sciences (Cefas) and is funded by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).
