A series of images showing average monthly chlorophyll a value (in mg m-3), which is a measure of phytoplankton abundance, during 2008 (January to July).

Daily ocean colour images were obtained by Ifremer from MODIS, and reprocessed using an algorithm designed to detect chlorophyll in European seas. The animation shows the developement of an extensive spring bloom in the North Sea during April and May, before it dies off in June.
